The secret of the spell cast over her when first she heard

kay manman la te ke tramble.

The spell that sets her eyes ablaze like fire,

her hair tracing the pattern of her body, swaying, turning,

transformed every time by zouk.

Her arms are set free as they pay homage,

they too are in a trance, they too feel its magic -

zouk their master, zouk their salve.

Our mood

The dark celebration of Gehard Demetz

We feel grumpy. We feel annoyed. We feel disappointed that we were not exactly blown away by Dutch Design Week. We could barely bring ourselves to discuss it. Amidst all this cleverness we found ourselves wandering in search of beauty like Arctic explorers in a blinding snowstorm…But in our detached and barely awake for it state, we noticed something that someone living in New York could certainly appreciate.

and then simply make a left on Haarlemmer weg?

And that would inspire us to stay riding for over an hour

along the way gazing over here

then

arriving

here

where

we

crossed the bridge

into

Haarlem

Centrum

and as we walked through

the

Oude Kerk

we said

a little prayer

that our legs might survive

the long road

leading us back

to Amsterdam…

We like to discover things.

We wanted to discover Naarden

and het Arsenaal.

We thought the trip to Naarden would be fun. We were told getting there would be easy. We like that 1 metro and 2 bus rides later – one of which had to be hailed from the side of a high way – we were undeterred, still committed to the goal. It was about 20 minutes into our walk when

things

started to

look up a bit.

We were finally approaching

the walled city

of Naarden

a star-shaped vesting

with

a lovely

city hall

and we continued on until we reached the collection of shops

that make up

Het Arsenaal

Moooi at Jan des Bouvries

where we could explore

its unique setting

and around every corner find a surprise,

especially the surprise of a courtyard

where we almost

forgot

we were still in Holland.

Thus we took the opportunity

to take a look at this

blow away vase by Front

…to touch its curves,

study its twisted decor

And we thought, the only thing that could be better

would be if we could see

step by step iterations

of blow away Delft Blauw;

a bit like this

we would love it.

We wondered,

how long until he would be

eating

We recoil in dismay at what others barely notice. It’s best not to describe our routine when using public bathrooms. Thus we suffer a bit from the relentless contact of strange hands with our food. No tissue paper in sight at any bakery, no gloves to handle poultry or fish, soiled hands dig greedily into piles of fruits and vegetables, zucht…These moments force us to close our eyes and take a breath. Moments that require us to liberate our minds from the spoiled experience and focus on the things that do continue to please – fresh squeezed orange juice and compelling cappuccinos everywhere. We cope….

which caused us

to feel some hesitation

when first,

we were led here..

..and surprised us

when we

landed here

And as we drew closer to

the vissersvrouwen

we felt quietly

overwhelmed

by this celebration

of Dutch traditional clothing

and delighted

by every

revelation
